Most domestic housecats have reached their adult size by the time they are 9 months old.

Adult male cats at 10 months of age weigh about twice as much as female cats of the same age. Large breeds, such as Maine Coons and Persians, take longer to reach full maturity, sometimes not until 2 years of age.

Cats are fully grown by about 2 years of age, but this varies by breed and gender.

Cats continue to grow for a short time after they reach adulthood; it is not until about 3-4 months after the cat has reached adulthood that its growth plates fuse together and stop growing in length. Before this fusion occurs, cats grow quickly and experience a brief spurt of growth.

It usually takes about 24 hours for hair to grow 1 centimeter long, but it can take up to 7-8 months for hair on the tail to reach its full length. This is because the hair has a growth period (when it’s long and fast-growing) and a resting period (when it’s short and slow-growing).

Cats, even as adults, have a growth period of about 2-4 months. This means that during this time their hair will grow faster than usual. When the cat reaches adulthood, the growth periods stop and the hair begins to take on its adult coat pattern. Depending on the length of the growth period, the cat’s tail will be about half as long as usual when in its adult coat.

This is because a cat does not have an effective way to remove old hair from their body. The only way that they can get rid of dead or damaged hair is by scratching themselves against objects. Cats also groom themselves by licking to keep their coat clean and odor-free.

Cats with longer hair around their tail, such as the Siamese, take much longer for this process to be completed than cats with shorter coats.

When do cat’s teeth stop growing?

At the same time that the cats’ growth plates fuse, their baby (deciduous) teeth are replaced with permanent adult teeth. Permanent canine teeth start emerging when a kitten is about 3-4 weeks old. Deciduous canines follow around 5-6 weeks of age. The incisors and premolars erupt around 10 weeks of age. Some cats may not get their permanent canines until they’re 12-14 weeks old; this varies by breed and the individual cat.

By the time that teeth have fully erupted, a kitten’s body growth has almost entirely halted.
